France Travel Photos Informaţii despre departament

This departement is one of vast contrasts, It ranges from mountains (the Alpilles to the north, the Saint Baume and the Saint Victoire to the east) to plains and flat country (Camargue).

Marseille is a city apart from the rest of Provence. It is a large cosmopolitan city, the second largest in the country next to Paris. Its port is the most important and opens the city to the world through the Mediterranean Sea. In contrast, Aix en Provence has remained more provincial in aspect and attracts those looking for a more Provencal flavor.

- Calanques

Nearly 20 km. long and 4 km. wide, stretching from Marseille to Cassis these creeks form an astounding wild coastline of 4000h. Inlets of steepsided rocky cliffs some rising to an impressive 400 m above sea level, Calanques can be seen by boat or by walking along any of the160 km. of well marked paths.

- Camargue

All the way to the left of the department just under Arles, is the meeting place of the Rhône and the Mediterranean. A natural and protected park , Camargue is composed of vast plains of wetlands, ponds and rice paddies all watched over carefully by its natural inhabitants the pink flamingoes, herons and cormorants.

- Alpilles

Another picturesque part of Provence to the north of the department and to the left of Luberon, these sharp peaked hills give the impression of being real mountains from afar. Between Arles and Lamanou, with St. Remy de Provence in the center, the Alpilles extend for 25km. surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and almond trees.
