This “belly of Paris”, evoked by Zola of the time of the markets the large one, became the “heart” of the capital, with an underground city on several levels.

- a network of roadway systems, primarily underground.
The place of Chatelet takes its name of an old fortress, Châtelet and destroyed under Napoleon I. On the other hand, it is in Napoleon III that the place owes its current aspect. In the center, the Fountain of Châtelet with its base of 1858 decorated sphinx and statues. The column, of 1808, was set up to point out the victories of NapoleonI.
